There has been a lot of uproar over the past couples of decades in respect of the retrofit and refurbishment of the UK's existing housing stock. Many home owners feel like they have been duped into signing up to have energy efficiency measures carried out on their homes with the promise of reduced energy bills and a better standard of living.
The truth for many of them is that they have been left facing the nightmare of extensive building repairs at huge costs to rectify the issues caused by these retrofit measures which were sold as a promise of a better standard of living.
We know that there are over 25 million existing domestic properties in the UK and we know we have an obligation to turn these into more energy efficient dwellings but we need to learn from recent mistakes to ensure that any future refurbishment works are feasible and relevant to each particular dwelling. The introduction of the new PAS 2035 standard should go some way towards making sure that we don't continue to make the same mistakes and we can actually deliver on creating better homes rather than creating a nightmare for those sold the dream.
